Electric Picnic

Electric Picnic takes place between 29th and 31st August 2008. It's the best festival in Ireland to be sure, to be sure. Easily rivalling the slightly larger Oxegen, it is imaginatively structured and has a strong personality. We can't think of a better way to end the summer.

There's only one way to get there without flying, and that is by ferry (unless of course you fancy swimming, in which case we want a full account please). Using the rail and sail combo ticket also saves money on the UK rail side of things.

Rail and sail

The rail and sail combo to Dun Laoghaire is available for less than £30 (£27 from London) each way. Once you're in Dun Laoghaire it's a two and half hour train journey to the festival. You can check train times at the Irish rail site - Portlaoise train station is about fifteen minutes drive from the festival site. Alternatively, get a bus for €25 from Dublin (details on the official site).

The following itinerary assumes you're coming from London, but the sail-rail combo works from a variety of major stations.

  • Step 1: Leave London on 28th August at 09.00 direct to Holyhead.
  • Step 2: Get the 15.15 ferry from Holyhead, arriving Dun Laoghaire at 17.04.
  • Step 3: Take the 19.22 to Dublin Connolly, change there and take the 20.42 to Dublin Heuston.
  • Step 4: Depart Dublin Heuston 21.00, arrving Portlaoise at 21.56
  • Step 5: Pitch you tent - Electric Picnic starts the next day.

You can also get the ferry from Holyhead straight to Dublin rather than going via Dun Laoghaire, cutting out ninety minutes on Irish trains, but if you do that you aren't able to take advantage of the cheap rail and sail fares.
